elementary OS is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu LTS. It promotes itself as a “thoughtful, capable, and ethical” replacement to macOS and Windows and has a pay-what-you-want model. The operating system, the desktop environment, and accompanying applications are developed and maintained by Elementary, Inc.
Per the developers of the elementary OS, installing in a virtual machine isn’t recommended, as it won’t perform as well as a full install.
If you are attempting to install in a virtual machine like VirtualBox, you may encounter an issue where the machine does not make the window large enough; you can try enabling EFI if possible but understand you may encounter other issues.
But if you think it is worth it, then you can try GNOME Boxes that offers a better default virtual machine experience with the elementary OS than other virtual machine software, but your experience may vary.
